et_flex_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h1>The Big Picture<\/h1>\n<p>Ultimately, this research project will support the overall mission of the JSU- <strong><u>Mississippi Delta Research Center of Excellence for Maternal Health<\/u> <\/strong>to empower women through increased trust and health literacy while reducing maternal morbidity and mortality in partnership with the Mississippi Delta community.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_2 et_pb_row et_flex_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_4 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_24_24 et_flex_column_24_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_0 et_pb_accordion et_pb_module et_flex_module\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_0 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle et_pb_module et_pb_toggle_open et_flex_module\"><h5 class=\"et_pb_toggle_title\">PUBLIC HEALTH RELEVANCE<\/h5><div class=\"et_pb_toggle_content et_flex_module\"><ul>\n<li>The Jackson State University (JSU) - <em>Mississippi Delta Research Center of Excellence for Maternal Health <\/em>was established to address preventable maternal mortality, decrease severe maternal morbidity, and promote maternal health in partnership with the Mississippi Delta community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>This research center will <strong>conduct two multi-layered research projects utilizing community health partners<\/strong>, inclusive of an extensive research training program for early-stage investigators, to address the interpersonal and other factors that affect maternal outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>By establishing meaningful and sustainable partnerships with the community in all parts of the process, we envision that this research center will overcome social, economic, environmental, and interpersonal barriers to <strong>high-quality, culturally competent postpartum maternal care <\/strong>and ultimately reduce maternal morbidity and mortality for women residing in the Mississippi Delta.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_accordion_item_1 et_pb_accordion_item et_pb_toggle healthcare among women in the Mississippi Delta.<\/strong>\u00a0Our strategy seeks to reduce structural barriers to healthcare engagement, improve providers\u2019 patient-centered communication at high risk for adverse maternal outcomes to quality prevention, care and support services.<\/p>\n<p>Maternal mortality and morbidity remain unacceptably high across the United States, and particularly in the Mississippi Delta, with Black women experiencing an elevated and unjust risk of loss of life and health.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" postpartum continuum can reduce adverse maternal outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Barriers to engagement in maternal healthcare persist in the Mississippi Delta, despite many attempts to intervene.<\/li>\n<li>Legacies and questionable practices have led to distrust of health advocates and healthcare providers among women in the Mississippi Delta.<\/li>\n<li>Poverty, transportation, lack of health insurance, poor health literacy, and limited availability of healthcare contribute to poor maternal health outcomes.<\/li>\n<li><em>The Village<\/em> that is needed to improve the conditions in which our mothers live, work, and play requires a collective effort and seamless continuum of services and support.<\/li>\n<li>The interventions will directly address cultural, structural, and interpersonal factors\/barriers to engagement in postpartum healthcare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em>Pearls of Hope (Online Mental Health Support Groups)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em>S.H.E. Reproductive Counseling<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em>Insurance Infosessions<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our interconnected research activities and partnerships aim <strong>to reduce structural and interpersonal barriers to healthcare engagement<\/strong>, thereby <u>empowering postpartum women to seek, advocate for, and receive the healthcare they
